The Two Oceans Aquarium is about fostering, love, respect and understanding of our oceans and inspiring support for their future well-being. At I&J we are also about abundant and healthy oceans for life – and that’s why we support the aquarium in important activities – like making sure all the fish, turtles, jelly fish, rays and sharks get their daily meal. I&J has supplied fresh fish to the Two Oceans Aquarium since the popular tourist attraction opened its doors on 13 November 1995 – feeding approximately 3000 individual animals with two tons of pilchards, hake, squid and mackerel delivered every month. Feeding time at the I&J Predator Exhibit is an eye-opening experience!
Recently, we have also invested R200 000 in sponsoring educational programmes such as the Exploring Oceanography and Zoology Course, the Junior Biologist course for Grade 6 students and the Young Biologist Programme for Grade 10 students which includes a certificate and the opportunity for graduates to volunteer at the Aquarium to share their love and knowledge of the oceans with others. It’s about the crucial role of environmental education; instilling in our youth the vital importance of protecting our rich ocean resources and respecting biodiversity to ensure a sustainable legacy for the future – so that we can continue to enjoy the bounty of seas (sharks included).
