Deep-fried Hake in Beer-style Batter

Serves 4


  • 4 I&J Deep Water Hake Fillets
  • oil, for deep-frying
  • 250 – 300 ml cake flour for batter, plus extra for dusting
  • 20 ml baking powder
  • 300 ml non-alcoholic, unflavoured beer


  • Fill a deep pot or deep-fat fryer with oil and preheat to 190°C.
  • Whisk the cake flour and baking powder together. Add the non-alcoholic beer and mix until a smooth batter is formed.
  • Season the I&J Deep Water Hake Fillets. Dust with the extra cake flour and then dip into the batter. Gently lower the fillets into the hot oil. Cook for approximately 8 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through. Place on paper towels before serving.

Serving suggestion
Serve with fries and fresh lime or lemon wedges.
